Hey everybody,
this evening I started my tobacco seeds for this season. I'm very excited as it is my first time growing from seeds.
Last year I bought transplants and grew in pots but the plants weren't really happy with the conditions I put them in. And the now cured leaves have black mold on them...
But that means it can only go better, at least I hope so.
The varieties I chose are:
Badisch Geudertheimer
Yellow Twist Bud
Prilep 66-9/7
Helena
I chose these as I've heard they're all fairly easy to air-cure. I'm looking to produce an American cigarette blend from YTB, Prilep and Helena. With the Badisch Geudertheimer i'll try to roll some cigars, cigarillos or experiment in some cigarette blends with it.
As I've read that YTB can be quite nice just color-cured I'll try a portion of it relatively young as as standalone cigarette tobacco as well.
Luckily I don't have to grow in pots this year but now have access to a nice piece of acreage with sun exposure all day long. I'm planning to grow 3 to 4 plants per species.
Very excited for the process!

Tips and opinions are very much welcome!

Just a quick seed-starting question: Do I need to water/mist the seed while waiting for them to sprout?
I have them in a closed plastic bag at 22-25c/72-77F on a window sill. The spot get's light all day but no direct sunlight.

Seedlings are looking good 14 days after sowing. Prilep and Helena were taking their time sprouting but are now also coming around nicely.
I think I'll single them out into individual pots in the next few days.
Is there a minimum size the seedling should be before transplanting them into individual pots?
Attached are photos of the seedlings. Ready to transplant?

I waited until the first "true" leaves emerged to transplant from my backups to dead/under performing pots.1006.jpg

I used a bambo skewer to loosen the soil and lift the roots instead of grabbing and pulling the seedlings. A good watering was also included to ensure recovery from any transplant shock.

I’ve found it easier to transplant sprouts as soon as possible.
Fewer roots to damage, less root mass to winkle out of the pot, disturbing the others.
