That is spoken like a true farmer . It is always next year will be better .

The radar shows most of the rain is east of me now .That system jus pulled moisture up from Georgia , Florida and Alabama for over a week and just kept coming my way .

It is dark cloudy outside right now like it could pour down . If that sun pops out there is no telling what the tobacco will do . I have a feeling that there will be lots more drop in the field .
I have neighbors in the same boat I'm in .

Thanks for all the support this is a great bunch of members .

Man those pictures in the first post are heartbreaking. My hat's off to Larry all the commercial farmers who have to deal with bad weather and high prices for what they have to buy and low prices for what they have to sell.

I bet that Larry would be willing to squeeze in the time it would take to fill your orders for whole leaf right about now.

as stated,,, we really have no idea, how this can affect you, it's your livelyhood.. we are just hobbiest doing this,

i was surprised on reading how the insurance companies operate, on thier farm insurance,
i feel for you, i have spoken to many farmer's that have been in your situation, with thier upcoming crop's, the '' doubt'' of knowing what this seasons crop will do, and how much is riding on it's performance,

but your a dedicated tobacco farmer, here in my area a lot of the farmers will rotate what they are going to grow, the game of farming, is a game, only a few will try to enter,
and those that do it, have my upmost respect. we have a simple bumpersticker we have on all of our fertilizer trailers.

it says I FARM YOU EAT. to think about it, it's very simple words, yet it's words, that have a very huge meaning,

i hope the weather does better for you, and that crop will survive and do well.

Well the sun came out hot and shiny and I just checked that 10 acre plot and it is not good at all .I can't seem to get a good picture to show the damage I may have to go make a video of the field .

I have 4 other fields and the tobacco is smaller but they are dropping to .

I just met a neighbor woman who is in her 90's and her and her sons tobacco lays right beside mine . They only have two acres total, but it as bad if not worse than mine .

Farmin is such an easy job. Just toss out some seed, sit back on the porch, collect some subsidies, and let God grow you money.

Reminds me of years and years ago when an old farmer won the lottery for three million. That was a dang big lottery back then. Reporter came and asked the old feller now that he was rich what would he do with all the money. "Aw, well," he said, "Don't know nuthin else, so I spose we'll just go on farmin til it's all gone."

Not sure what kind of farms you're used to Webmost but around here it ain't easy. Between time, cost, knowledge, harvest, growing, materials, permits, licenses, hiring labor, sale of product. Most farmers I know don't have a 8 or 9 to 5. It's a 24/7. If you're not working, you're worrying.

And it hasn't changed any in the 75 years I've been around it. All that changes is the amount of bullshit from folks who know nothing about farming.

I hear about farm subsidies but I never see them . I have applied for a couple just for the gov to say I don't get any . The rich get richer and the poor stay poor .

If you have bad luck with your crop or anything on the farm the bills keep coming . Property Taxes , insurance , break downs , fuel ,electric , they are still to be paid somehow .

I won't feel the pinch until the end of the year when payments are due .

I think starting this Friday night I will get my old lady and tell her to get her high heels and lipstick and go to town .
That's right there is a place up there we can have a yard sale .Made you think ?

I think he was bein fecesus.

No, I wasn't -- I was being sarcastic.

Hey, here's a wierd deal tho: We drove up to Tidioute this July 4th weekend (pronounced TID ee yoot). It's the little river town that time forgot and trouble missed, only one trailing silent "e" away from a wardrobe malfunction. If you ever want to get away from it all, know what, it ain't there, I can tell you that. Anyways, we usually ride the big bagger motorcycle up there every 4th to see the Battle on Bull Mountain PBR bull riding event at Hickory Creek ranch. This time, we rented a car, because I tore the living crap outta my knee playing handball last Wednesday. Yanked the tendon off the kneecap. Anyhoo, the point is, if I can find my point --- we're driving up there past Stroudsburg where I took pics of the Amish tobacco I posted a while back. You should see them now! Big. Tall. Wide. Time we came back, they were huge and bushy monsters. Two foot tall I swear, two foot apart and meeting in the middle. Brawny linebacker baccy. Call it linebacco.

Now, I know darn well they've had just as much torrentious frog stranglers up there as here. It's only thirty miles away. But not a sign of drowning. Not a bit of stress. Why?

I wonder: Is it the variety you think? Is that Pennsylvania broadleaf just robuster? Or is it the hilly black Pennsyltucky soil draining better?

Wish I woulda got out with the camera, now; could show you something; but just getting in and out of the car is a chore with this knee what it is, so I wimped out.

I've heard of drought resistant varieties, but I'm sure I've never heard of flood resistant varieties....but that doesn't mean there aren't any.

Maybe hillier ground drains better. Maybe the plants were further along and were able to tolerate the wet conditions better.
