Howdy-

I like knives.

One of the things I've been looking forward to is owning a nice Chaveta.

I'm a big fan of nice knives for the job.

I love seeing thick, well used blades on the Cigar videos online.

I love the patina and the use marks.

I've seen some rollers make their own. I've seen spring steel, circular saw blades cut and repurposed, and what look to be CNC cut Stainless.

I've seen handles on the tops and no handles.

I've seen longer ones and stumpy knives.

I'm interested in seeing your good old Chaveta.

Any and all Chaveta info and pics is appreciated. Drawings, ideas etc.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

You'll likely not find a "thick" chaveta due to the fact a chaveta is made to be used on an almost constant basis...a thick blade would cause fatigue in the user. There are no manufacturers of commercial grade chavetas that I'm aware of...until last month.

I ordered 100 hand made chavetas from the Dominican Republic a few months ago. Every single one of them was different in one way or another. I took the best one and created a scale drawing for it and sent it to a CNC shop. These chavetas have been made from hardened steel and every single one of them will be the same size, thickness etc. etc. I was supposed to pick them up Tuesday, but I've been too busy. Pictures will be posted as soon as I get them.

That is good news!

The link above is the way to go but, if Don C. is having some made to add to inventory, that is good news. We all do like to support his efforts. and not just because he has the best stuff.
There are some to be had on eBay.
AS per your request. here is my stash....

And they look nice and thin.

What the **** did you start here WebMost? You buy glue and the water rises just out of spite. I open my big mouth about not being able to find a "thick" chaveta and.......

I guess I'm going to have two models to choose from. One will be Texas style or maybe American style because it's a big chunk of heavy metal reminiscent of a Bowie knife or an Arkansas Toothpick. Something was lost in the translation on the drawing and the chavetas were made with .064 45 rockwell spring steel. Can you say "hefty"?

The other model will be a traditional style which will be about half the thickness of "The Mobetta Chavetta"

The chavetas will be sent sharpened.

I like the humor... you think they'll be to hefty? my chaveta, which most likely is like your Dominicans, is .03 in. or .8 mm where my ulu is .06 or 1.5 mm. The handled knives are .02 or .6 mm. The Ulu is stainless or something, not so heavy though. I'm sure spring steel is heavier.

I use one of these mainly:

I had to sharpen it substantially. It works but is a bit long and has too big of a radius. I'll probably invest in a proper chaveta one of these days.

That knife on the left looks similar to an Eskimo skinning knife. I would like to make one of those.

I wouldn't mind one of the thick spring steel for use in the kitchen.

I'm assuming something on the order of 1095 steel or thereabouts?
