let's see your veggie garden {pics} 2021-26

I'm about three weeks late compared to last year, but I started some seeds today. Three varieties of eggplant, three peppers, and two varieties of tobacco.

Planted the eggplant and peppers today. There's room for ladypeas, and Armenian cucumbers, and a pair of okra plants but the flesh is weak.

Imagine, in your mind's eye, a plot of bare garden dirt with seeds hidden beneath the surface.

I just put in seed for summer squash (yellow scallop) and bush green beans.

I've mentioned growing cacti a few times. Here's a picture of one planted hear my front door. Its a local species called Opuntia humifusa. I've heard the nopales from these make good eating. This flower will be the last bloom from this plant for this year.

After about a week of continuous, hot, dry weather, during which I watered just the tomato plants once, they are now well established and growing.

A week ago, I put in seed for yellow scallop summer squash, and a single row of green beans. They have not been watered, but have begun to emerge.

In another week, I'll add a second row of green bean seeds.

I've also put in seed for okra, at the end of the bed. It is seed I saved in 2019, and may or may not germinate.

Rote Johannisbeere/red currants are ready in the garden.

After moving last month we left our 300+ sf garden and mini fruit orchard to a completely blank and sterile new yard. The transformation has begun with this massive planting of five pepper plants and two fig trees. And an oak.

What variety of oak did you select?

Monterey Oak (pictured) and a Red Oak. They did very well in Austin and several neighbors have healthy specimens in their yards. Will probably get a few live oaks as well along with some red buds.

I whittled a couple of pipe tampers from ~⅜" thick Live Oak branches seven years ago. I've used one of them daily since then, with virtually no wear to the wedge end. I figured that if it's good enough for the bulkheads of a Man of War, it might hold up as a pipe tamper.

I have no complaints about my four tomato plants.

As for the other veggies, the suspiciously small cotyledon of a single squash turned out to be either acacia or mimosa, likely from the Black Kow composted manure. I've replanted the squash, still with nothing to show. The green beans are growing. I planted a second row of green beans a couple of days ago. A line of okra appears to show one small sprout today. The hot weather may have cooked the squash and okra seeds in the ground.

The old (dying) cherry tree at the garden house is still producing pretty good.

I grew my tomatoes and basil (Italian large leaf and greek) from seed. The place im renting also has raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb ive been tending to.
