i finally got rid of almost all of mine. i thought i was going to get creamed on the sucker grow but they are gone for the most part.

Argiope aurantia: black and yellow garden spider, female. She has built a web among my blackberries.

They are "harmless" to humans. In addition to eating insects, this big mama is not squeamish about fillet of gecko for dinner.

My grandmother called those "Jacob's Ladder" Spiders. That one looks huge.

The ruler is positioned about 1" behind the spider's belly, so its body is actually about 1" long.

I have a twelve gauage shotgun shell with her name on it!!!!! "The horse" hates spiders!!!! Where i come from they're refered to as bananna spiders because the bananna trees are full of them. When i was little colt growing up in SW. Fla. We were playing hiding go seek right at dusk dark, and i was fast too, until i ran around a corner and dead head in to a web with one of these in the middle. The Dang thang bit me and i went nuts. My wife kills the spiders and shows the dead bodys to me.

What Spiders Do in the Night

During the night, each night, spiders build webs on the tall grass. This is about 2 acres.

Most of the spider webs are about 18" across.

Every puff of white is another dew-covered spider web. They are spaced about 6' apart, from one side of the pasture to the other. They are only visible in the morning dew, when the light hits them.

Heads or Tails?

I found this Saddleback Caterpillar on the underside of a Silver Maple leaf. It's about 3/4" long. They are present throughout the eastern half of the US.

The tiny spines that coat its "horns" and legs will cause painful skin irritation.

i am smoking about five gallons of jalipinos tonight. it could be a long nite but i am pretty sure i will survive. my only worry is i had a door to door sales women come here this afternoon and look around. i am not to worried but i don't trust people i don't know. i gave her a few homegrown cigs and sen't her on her way. looks like we will be out late tonight. does that sound like a good excuse to stay up late and monitor the yard for everyones sake?

My corn patch fell over. Boo hoo. I'm told it is because I put three seeds to a hole. I planted "truckers favorite", an old old open pollinated variety of white corn. Anyway, the stalks did not know they were dead and kept on growing. I cooked an ear yesterday, and I don't know if I left it too long on the stalk. The kernels were large, opaque, and chewy, with a flavor of hominy. Did I leave it too on the stalk, or does this variety taste this way? Has anyone else eaten or grown truckers favorite?

It's been a long time since we had a garden, but I think I remember picking as soon as the tassels turned brown. (coming out of the end of the cob)

Not a picture of my allotment - but what came out of it today. A nice harvest of maincrop potatoes in a surprisingly patriotic array of colours.

Blue: Blue Danube

It's not total self-sufficiency - they'll probably last until January or February for the family. But not bad!
