Need some help wierd brown holes in leaf

I do not know what this is but it is spreading to a few leaves in my burley. I do not see it any where else but in one section. I have not seen any bugs causing this. I noticed it a few days ago but now it is spreading. If you know what it is how do I fix it. I am planning on getting rid of all of the infected leaves from the garden. any help would be great

It looks like Squash Bug damage. I had it last year and finally hunted down the bug and killed it dead. Here's a thread showing the bug and the damage.

Garden safe Ortho Bug B Gone may be your only option if you can't track down the varmint. I just had to put some out for grass hoppers that were eating the crap out of my leaf.

I have used soap and water on the aphids, but this outbreak is limited to one area of the burley and only on the bottom leaves. How do you fix this?

I will go look for bugs but I haven't seen any.

I really do not think it is bugs as I have not seen any and have no damage any where else in the garden. I also do not think it is burnt by the soap. I have no idea but I did pick all of the damaged leaves and will see what happens next. I will keep an eye on it and update if anything changes

I have looked and looked and have found no eggs worms or squash bugs but I at least know what I am looking for now. What can I use to get rid of squash bugs if I find any?

I believe this to be a microbial problem. If you look carefully at the lamina where there are no holes yet, you can see a white mottling, indicative of tissue disease. Even the surrounding, healthier appearing leaves seem to be abnormal.

Would you pull the plants at this stage or look into it further? He said it seems to be spreading.

If it's wildfire, then it will spread to the entire patch. Without any evidence that it's bugs, I would be inclined to yank the affected plants, and burn them.

Alternaria is Brown Spot, and tends to form circular lesions that appear to have concentric laminations. I don't think that's what this is. I had Brown Spot on my Jalapa last year, and the lesions are distinctive.

Target Spot may also be Brown Spot, as Brown Spot doesn't have it's own listing on the UKY site.

Firing up

How long has the Burley been topped or how hot is the temps ?
Nitrogen deficiency , Potassium deficiency is more likely your problem

Burley will do that when it gets topped and starts to over ripen .It starts firing up at the bottom and in time work its way to the top . Hot dry windy weather speeds it along .

Burley gets the white mottling as it gets ripe and when it gets over ripe it dries up and dies .

Most of the time it starts with the very bottom leaves and goes up in time .

Splitworn damage looks similar and is possible .

There you go . 4 weeks is pushing the ripeness of burley .

That does not hurt the use of the leaves in any way . They will shred up and you will never know it .

Burley is harvested at three to four weeks .


Here is some of my organic at four weeks . I was a little late harvesting . Note the brown on some of the leaves . This tells me the burley is starting to over ripen . Over ripen is when the acres of tobacco takes the turn and starts loosing pounds per acre instead of gaining . Notice some suckers , That means no sucker control applied .

Well I just harvested all of the bottom leaves off of the burley. 300 giant leaves came off and are now hung in the barn. I guess this is why this is the only strain to do this. I just don't understand why it is only on the lower end of the row only on a few plants. Thank you all for the information and I will keep an eye out for bugs. I just haven't seen many bugs this year other than aphids and grasshoppers and I have them under control at the moment.

You may be correct, Larry, but those are green leaves that are falling apart in the initial photos.
