Hey all I am out of Indiana and just caught the bug to grow tobacco a few weeks ago and bought some seeds off of leaf only. I am quickly learning I am behind the 8 ball - hoping I can pull something off this grow season.

If anyone has starter plants going I’d love to buy some to make sure I have something at least!

I bought Connecticut broadleaf and Connecticut shade. I do have a greenhouse which will help me get some high heat and extended grow time.

All in all learning a lot reading on here and excited to meet more of you. Thanks.

If you're quick to buy seeds, there's just enough time in the season for varieties that mature 45 - 65 days after transplanting (assuming your first frost is after October 1 - USDA Zone 5). Most cigar varieties will mature in that time.
Thank you @Wombat_smokes I did order Connecticut broadleaf and Connecticut shade- I am in zone 5b and have a greenhouse so I can draw out the season longer for sure. I just wasn’t sure with getting seeds like next week or so if I’d be too far behind.

Really appreciate the info.

Is 10 plants a decent amount to start with? I’ve seen like 3,200 is a full time job so I’ve got to imagine with 10 or so I’d be able to try to make a few cigars

10 plants is a good start for any first time grower. I, however, chose 20 varieties and as many plants as I could put in each of my grow spots. I'll have nearly 200 plants, not including my vegetable garden.

As for productivity, you'll get lots of filler, some binder, and a few wrappers (esp. In multi purpose plants).

I make a lot of assumptions and ignore a lot of variables to determine growing time from seed start. Start seeds 7 weeks before transplant, days to maturity, 2 extra weeks for leaf maturity.

CT Broadleaf:
49 days + 50 days + 14 days = 113 days.

Seeds can take up to 3 weeks to germinate. Days to maturity can vary drastically between seasons. Leaf ripeness can take upto 4 weeks after maturity/topping.

113 days after May 20 is Sept 30. Late September is cutting it close, but air curing tobacco happens indoors (shed, basement, barn, etc...).

Dang I think I’m not going to make it. I don’t even have the seeds here yet. Well it may just be a slightly not perfect year or if I find anyone with plants started that I can buy I can at least have some of those to go on.

Thanks for taking the time to explain that out. It’ll be a learning season for sure. But I hope I can make a few cigars @Wombat_smokes

Little Dutch is fast, grows great in containers, and makes an excellent cigar filler.
