We had to pull it all out of the kiln for this photo but it should all be smokable in the next week or so. All produced in 220 sq feet of space. This would provide cigarettes for one pack a day smoker for about a year.

We used a hand cranked Pasta Shredder. Very slow and we will have to come up with another way to shred for this years crop. Shredding took more work than everything else combined. My wife has a Kitchenaid blender so we are looking at getting an angel hair pasta maker for it. That or a high quality paper shredder.

Daniel, Get the angel hair pasta maker attachment for your Kitchenaid.. you will not regret it! They are usually on ebay and go for about $80.00. I watched for a long time and finally picked up a new on on ebay for $60.00!

I thought the attachment was expensive a year ago. We shredded 15 lbs of tobacco this year and are on our second hand crank pasta maker. They cost about $30 each. That alone woudl have gotten me the attachment if I had found a deal on it.
Looking forward at this year I need something that will shred over ten times that much tobacco at an estimated cost of $600 if the pasta makers keep breaking down. Looking at paper shredders that would work they run about $300 and still have issues when it comes to tobacco. So expensive starts to become a relative thing.
Also I have money. Had I done nothing about the cost of tobacco a year ago I would spend at least $3000 this year on tobacco. That is if the cost of the tobacco we where buying has not gone up. But I did do something, actually lots of somethings.
1. I found a much lower price source fo tobacco online and used part of that $3000 to buy all the tobacco we smoked last year and most of what we will need for this year as well.
2. I used the remainder of that money to buy starter stand, lights, pots, flats, thermometers, kiln, thermostat, crock pot, buckets, and soil to grow our own. Nearly $1000 to grow 15 lbs of tobacco so far. The most expensive tobacco I have ever bought. bUT I do nto have to repeat any of that expense to do it again this year.

This year I will grow tobacco in my buckets again. But i will also grow over 1600 plant in a field I have been allowed to use. That so far looks like it will cost around another $1000. But this time we will produce aroudn $9000 in tobacco. If it fails I can still buy our tobacco for another year and have not spent one dime more than I would have otherwise. Same money spent differently is how I see it. And spending it differently makes it go much further. This year I can spend only a third of it, another third to buy another years supply of tobacco if needed and have the last third still in my pocket.

My wife is starting to look at me like sooner or later this has to result in less money going out of the bank account. I think I am just a couple of months from making that happen. God willing and the creek don't rise we will get a good crop from this field this summer and we will have ended a $250 a month expense. and it didn't cost me any additional money. And yes I spend that money month by month just like I would have otherwise. sometimes the waiting for the next allowance drives me nuts.

Now if I can just figure out how to do the same thing with our power bill.

ive been toasting it, and shredding it by hand,,,,,,then putting it in a metal straninig tray,, over my crock-pot, covered with a big air-tight dome, to get it into case, and then jarring it,

but ive seen some nice set-up's of a mounted hand crank pasta shredder,,,

thats my goal,, to have a giliteen type blade on one end, and a mounted shredder on the other end,,,
