If you still follow the guy, he sells his pipes on his website from time to time. Despite the price tag, they typically get snatched up in a matter of hours.

Until you said something I had no idea he sold pipes so I'll have to take a look. The deep dive into the how and why took over so I never really paid much attention to any particular pipe maker back then outside of watching videos of them making pipes, J. Alan is the only name that comes to mind and probably mostly in part because he reminds me of someone rather than anything about his pipes or videos

Lol thank you for the wonderful ideas! Not sure I'll ever get around to doing it but I will watch the videos for inspiration! One never knows! I have several here I can try and see if it's something I enjoy! I've tried the sponge brushes they didn't help me much either. And you are correct the littlest imperfection will jump out at you and make you crazy!

Something burned out on the circuit board of my mini lathe last year so making pipes basically came to a halt with a handful of stummels unable to be fitted with stems. Except for one. Always given less attention because despite the shape coming along nicely it needed some drilling hidden and the pipes that didn't have small errors like that seemed more important because they were potential revenue should I list them for sale.

A couple weeks ago the creativity bug bit hard and most of the needed or fun projects that could be attended to around the house required a lot of setup or moving things around so instead it seemed right to finish this pipe that was started at least a year ago. A few more passes on the buffing wheel and it's time time for its maiden voyage

First pipe I made a few weeks back. Freehand hardwood cherry bowl, tart cherry wood stem. Copper line for tenon between the two. Smokes ok, but have had to re-drill that airway to open it back up recently.

Here are a few others that I started out of spalted pear. The long sticks might become stems, black walnut and sumac that I burned the pith out of.

Thanks! I'll put the patina on right quick, except I keep whittling little bits off here and there as I get more familiar with it the final vision becomes clearer.
THis one sits just right. The Bit is off whatever surface i put it down on.
It's just about straight, but the bowl cants forward a hair (a cant hair?), to make for easier lighting, and to keep the smoke out of my eyes.
It's nice and light, and great for clenching. I took off that stupid heatshrink cause it made it too slippery (and also, Yuk)

Not sure on the wood, it came from an old piano someone had thrown out. Harder/heavier than oak but with smaller pores and a smoother grain. The stem is from the same piece of wood but with different grain orientation. Smoked good once but its not fully cured. Finish is two rubbings with stand oil I added a little alkyd to. Bowl diameter is .685" and depth is 1.34". Pipe overall length is 4.55".

Sorry I know this is really late but I actually have one of his pipes, a beautiful Danish he custom made for me. I love it to death though I hardly smoke a briar anymore and exclusively smoke meers. I have been trying to sell it for a while but haven't had any takers. Kraig is an AMAZING guy and equally amazing pipemaker.

New one :)
Maybe a week old
Hand Carved Ash Stummel, Cherry Shank, and Acrylic Stem
Smokes great! Can't stop smoking it.
The ash shank was longer, but I busted it trying to bend the stem just that last little bit :(
Sometimes Good enough is better than busted.
I'm still pretty pleased.

Sitters are always convenient. Nice hand carving.

Bob
Thanks! Yeah, I like the convenience. 1 less thing to fuss with or worry about.
It's nice and light too. Great for clenching. I can pack it when I have a moment, then just grab and go if I'm headed for a walk.
Or just set it down and not have to think about it if I get caught up working on something.

Pipe #2. Still waiting for my version of Danish oil to fully cure but I did smoke this a few times before finishing. Straight chamber (119° drill profile) .750" diameter and 1.560" deep.

Its a nice smoker and completely silent. Draft tube is .125" straight from bowl to button.
PipeJan25b.jpg
The wood is Hard Maple (dried/kilned turning block) and the stem vulcanite. Satin finish for both the stummel and stem. Tenon is .187" stainless and stem diameter .485".

The intent was to stain dark, sand then stain light. But I immediately saw the stain bleed through to the chamber and knew I had made a mistake. First time using alcohol based stain
and I think it needed thinned a bit. Next time I will and use an airbrush to apply it. Not a total loss though as the pipe turned out great IMHO.

That is Lovely. Tidy, and looks nice and light. Get the stem from VF?
I'd love to try a vulcanite stem. these acrylic stems I've been using are too slippery. I want something a little softer, that I can chomp in to a little.
There's so many options I just don't know where to start.

Yes,I picked quite a few things from VF. The vulcanite does have a softer feel on the teeth. The other block I have drilled is fitted with an acrylic stem but Im not sure when Ill finish it since Im really wanting to cut into this Goncalo Alves.
