Are you supposed to keep it mulched to prevent grasses from invading around plants year round. I have always wanted to start some but figured I might not keep up maintenance.
That's a good idea but they don't require much maintenance because during the growing seasons the plants create so much shade that weeds don't grow around them. Definitely the lowest maintenance vegetable I can think of. The other nice thing is they are the earliest vegetable. Up north here we can eat them around tthe time we are planting other vegetables.

Ah! Asparagus.
Since asparagus roots grow deep, and onion roots grow shallow, I use the space between the asparagus crowns to plant waves of spring onions for salad. That seems to work well.

Thats good idea. I always think about lost space in that area.

so i got to wait 3 years before i can pick this stuff,?

Or you can buy three years old roots and start it right away.

Did you know that everyone's pee stinks when they eat asparagus ...

BUT ...

10-20% of the population don't have the gene that allows them to smell it - so when someone says that their pee doesn't smell after eating asparagus then they aren't telling the truth ... the fact is that it does an they CAN'T smell it!

That's all I have to add on this ... except for saying that this year will be my 3rd year of having the asparagus bed and this year I will be harvesting like crazy when our season comes in May/June ... soon!
