Hello everyone. Late start for me with this log and my growing season. I almost completely forgot and when remembered considered not even making a grow log this year due to just being plan old busy but I came to my senses and realized everyone is busy and I can make time for the things I care about. I am attempting to grow African red, my hybrid (f7 bright x burley), green stem burley acquired from local market years ago, buckeye red (also a hybrid my father got from an old commercial grower who created it for his personal use many years ago). Krumovgrad and Costello. I tried to upload pics but had issues so I will later…thanks!!

Wow, what do you feed them with?

Heavy nitrogen by the looks of it. The leaves are getting way too big while the stem is thin and struggling to hold them.
I'd cut the lower leaves and bury the plants deep in large cups and use a no-nitrogen fertilizer (something like 0-10-10) to thicken the stem and roots.

I disagree. The stems are not struggling at all and are about the size they always are in relation to leaf size on seedling plants still in trays. I always plant larger plants a good ways down in soil but not in cups. If I’m going through the trouble of transplanting hundreds of seedlings it will be in the field and it’s too wet for that right now. The plants have grown exceedingly large in the trays this year but that is not a problem, just an interesting occurrence. Thank you for the response though and have a good season!

Plants today. They are growing quite large in the trays…larger than I have ever seen them! They need planted but of course weather is not permitting. Some of my orientals are about 2 foot tall!! There has been some collateral shading out of adjacent plants that did not grow as quickly but that’s just how things go!

I have successfully (well, as much as can be expected I guess) transplanted all my seedlings to the field, including two last minute entries of Tennessee red leaf. I purchased two nice plants from local market for about $3/per plant and planted them. Is it a burley, a bright leaf…who knows?? I know northwoods has it listed as burley but apparently also had it listed as bright before that?? Anyway, something more pressing had caught my attention. Some black/ brown creeping up the stems of various transplants a day or two after sunny hot field days. I am hoping this is not some kind of bacterial black leg/ black shank. I did have some issues with damping off but was able to control it during early seedling stages…well what does this look like to you?? (I admittedly did not harden off as well as I should have this season)
