Tongue tingling sensation

I got these two pouches of pipe tobacco as a gift, Mr. B's English Mix and Borkum Riff Cherry Cavendish. They taste nice but give me a strong tongue tingling sensation and I have to wash it out with lots of beer when smoking . I don't normally buy pipe tobacco but these came from a local tobacconist. What can be the cause? I never get no tingling from my tobacco when smoking a pipe.

Propylene glycol. That's my guess. Used as a humectant, antimicrobial preservative, and flavor/aroma carrier. Present in nearly all pipe tobacco blends. Good brands us just enough to get their desired outcome without interfering with the final product.

I had a nearly 20 year-old unopened package of "Rum & Maple" aromatic pipe tobacco by Altadis. Hurt my tongue like I've never had before! Being "cheap" I blended the most of the 50g pouch with nearly 150g of Constellation by Cornell & Diehl. That helped a little, but the bite of Propylene glycol was still there.

Propylene glycol.

I inhaled a lot of that when I was into electronic cigarettes, never a bad sensation. It's neutral in my experience. High alkalinity, states the artificial entity I'm not allowed to name.

Tingling toward the back of the tongue (absent chemical adulterants) can be caused by increased alkalinity. Tingling toward the front of the tongue can be caused by increased acidity. Chemical adulterants of all sorts can cause tingling.
