Planted at 2.5 sq. ft. per plant, my Smyrna 9 reached about 7 feet (required a step ladder to bag). Nearly the same with Xanthi Yaka 18a and Izmir Ozbas. This year, with the Xanthi planted at 0.68 sq. ft. per plant (roughly 9" apart in all directions), their height is about 3' to the crowsfoot, and the leaves are more appropriate to the variety. While the larger version (wide spacing) is good for all these varieties, the smaller leaf from denser planting is more delicate, more subtle, and more in keeping with what most folks expect from Oriental leaf.

yeah, I've got Izmir Ozbas planted where it only get 4-5 hours of morning sun, shaded the rest of the day. Plants are 4+ feet tall, but very small delicate leaf.

just a thought, but the side pieces on a wiper blade are fairly stout and already have a little notch at one end. you would just need to file a point at the other end.

this is a good idea. Those two metal strips that support the blade are a spring tempered stainless steel so would be nearly indestructable for use as a needle.

Stop by a local auto parts store on a rainy day, can probably get as many as you need for free as most of the stores have free wiper installation so will have a can full of old ones available.

So does the finished tobacco from the larger widely spaced plants smoke differently; Or is it more of a size and appearance deal.

marksctm, do you mean screwing up by planting them with too much spacing? If so, I wouldn't worry about it. I'm smoking last year's Smyrna that had wider spacing, maybe 18" and it tastes great.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking.
It's for mostly for cigarettes so I was thinking' if the leaves are small or big, they should still smoke fine. I'll probably plant them the same next year.

I think it was Jitterbug that told me to use a umbrella rib a while back to run through a tight cigar to get draw.
Their perfect for stringing, the umbrella i got mine out of already had a hole where it was stitched to the canopy, and is 11 inches in length.
