I could re-use yesterday's pic... the same Sav 320KS, but this time loaded with Flight Surgeon Deluxe just out of the press this morning. I'll have to smoke this for a few days and see how I like it long term. I was expecting something a little lighter, for some reason - the name made me thing of Squadron Leader, but the Perique really spices it up a bit. As I have learned, though, I won't get the full impact until it's rested for a couple of weeks after the press.

Rattray's Black Mallory. Only had it a couple times. Not bad.

Tonight, I spoke to a gentleman who was gifted a tin of Black Mallory from before Kohlhase & Kopp took over production, and he told me it tastes much better than the current production and because it doesn't have humectants it smokes much drier.

VA/Per shootout today. On the left, some of my home grown VA with Perique, a very simple blend. On the right, a close approximation of what was claimed to be an Escudo-like blend from a thread here. Trying both side by side to see which I prefer. “Batch #3” on the left is much more Virginia-forward; starts really nicely, gets a bit less wonderful about mid bowl. “Batch #6” on the right is bolder, spicier, more Perique-forward. I think I’d like #3 better with some bright or lemon in it to sweeten it up a bit more.

GREEK INDEPENDENCE WAR 1821-2025 Anniversary

YpJ1iCh.jpg

As today ον 25 March 1821 the Orthodox Greeks officially started the revolution against the ottoman empire fighting the muslim turks and their allies (from albania, bosnia, tunisia, egypt, croatia, algeria etc) to end an almost 400 year old tyranny and genocide.
Their motto was "Freedom of Death" and in few areas that the turks never manage to invade was "Victory or Death". The 3 finger sign that you see was for our sacred triptych which have it from the ancient Greece era, is ''Country-God-Family".

I am smoking Planta Elysee and at dinner i will raise a glass of red wine to the memory of the fallen fellow countrymen in the battlefield, those which tortured till death in prisons and the innocent civilians who were massacred.

Comoy's "The Guildhall", shape 298. This little beastie arrived on my doorstep Saturday. It has hardly been smoked, and has almost no cake and minimal charring in the bowl. Inaugural smoke on Sunday was McClelland 2010 "Classic Virginia".

Today, I threw together a mixture of Stokkebye PS 701 and PS 702, with a little WLT Stacked Basma thrown in.

Another shootout. Smokeout? Whatever. I had just enough Escudo Navy Deluxe left for one bowl. I've been trying some VA/Per blends to try and find something that may not "match" Escudo, but at least that I'd like as much or close. When I'm in the mood for a VA/Per, I really enjoy Escudo.

Tonight I loaded up the last of my Escudo, and one of my home made blends. Mine in a cob, the Escudo in an old Grabow bulldog that I bought and restored. I smoked them side by side, switching off a few times. The Escudo was absolutely wonderful when I lit it -- a sweet, gentle Virginia start. Mine - not so much; it's bold and very much a Perique blend from the get-go. After that first dozen of so puffs, though, they're fairly similar. Not identical, and my palate is not good enough to really break down the differences, but by halfway through the bowl I don't really care which one I pick up next. Maybe that's an indication of success.

I like your pipes, bulldog and cob corn!
Good choice mate, I love bulldog but I am leaning over more and more to the corn cob team, in the future I may smoke corn cob exlusively.
I like the fact that both corn and tobacco are holy plants for the native americans but it smokes the best also in my opinion.
I want a really nice corn cob pipe, it is difficult to find one here but preferably I want one from a corn cob I have grown myself.
Plese shout out if you know how to grow a good corn cob pipe!

It is quite a three pipe problem…

Finishing up the two bowls from last night; I have arrived at two conclusions. First, my VA/Per is not refined enough - no surprise there. Second, I need to be in the right mood to enjoy a VA/Per at all. So, I loaded the big Savinelli with some of my new batch of ToA. It is, quite frankly, amazing. Better than the small test batch by a good margin.
