It's a shame to lose great blends, especially when we lose them not because the components go away, but because someone "knows better" and ruins them. That was one of my favorites for decades. It's been over a decade since it broke my heart.

Oooo, look at that!Tonight we christen my Peterson Emerald Bulldog with a slight variation of my home blend. Amazing how swapping cigar trim for Dark Fire Cured brightened up the VA/Per aroma. And the pipe smokes great too.

I like your pipes, bulldog and cob corn!Another shootout. Smokeout? Whatever. I had just enough Escudo Navy Deluxe left for one bowl. I've been trying some VA/Per blends to try and find something that may not "match" Escudo, but at least that I'd like as much or close. When I'm in the mood for a VA/Per, I really enjoy Escudo.
Tonight I loaded up the last of my Escudo, and one of my home made blends. Mine in a cob, the Escudo in an old Grabow bulldog that I bought and restored. I smoked them side by side, switching off a few times. The Escudo was absolutely wonderful when I lit it -- a sweet, gentle Virginia start. Mine - not so much; it's bold and very much a Perique blend from the get-go. After that first dozen of so puffs, though, they're fairly similar. Not identical, and my palate is not good enough to really break down the differences, but by halfway through the bowl I don't really care which one I pick up next. Maybe that's an indication of success.
