In 1889, Chief Whitecap presented this pipe to a physician (Gerald Willoughby) who testified on his behalf during the trials that followed the Riel Rebellion. It has just been repatriated to the Whitecap Dakota First Nation.

If Chief Whitecap smoked the traditional tobacco in his region, my best guess is that it was Nicotiana quadrivalvis.
