Checked on my plants last night and noticed some with yellow leaves. Anything that I should be concerned about or is everything normal?

When did you transplant?
What variety?
How are you fertilizing, what are you using, how often?
How's the rain? Are you watering?
They don't look topped, are any of that variety budding?
Is it one variety or different varieties in the same area?
Are these plants close together in one area or random through the field?

Planted in the field May 30
TN 90 and Prilep are the ones that are showing yellow. The other plants are looking good.
I'm not sure what my parents used if they used anything. Good question and point. Need to be better on this subject.
We went through a dry spell for I would say a month. Had to water often. All of a sudden the rains started coming. I personally haven't been watering not sure if my parents have. Its been raining I would say at least once week might be twice or three times a week of rain at least last week. Its been hit or miss. Mostly scattered storms and lots of them didn't rain at my parents.
None of the plants are topped. I guess I figured topping meant cutting below the crowsfoot when it grew. Where do I top at? So far, the only variety currently budding is the cuban criolo 98. Though I am sure the others will be budding soon.
2 different variety in the same area. Prilep and TN90. More so the TN90. They are close together. I have them in rows for their type.

My guess would be a general nutrient deficiency compounded by nutrient leaching of the soil by the frequent rain.

Fertilizing now may kick them back into a growth stage and delay maturity. I wouldn't do anything to the Prilep. A light fertilizing to the Burley is tempting but it depends on your climate and what your weather conditions are going to be when it comes time to start curing. Kicking them back into a growth stage may mess up the timing of your cure. It depends.

I top each variety when 50% or more of the plants of that variety have at least one open flower, then I top all of the ones of that variety. I do not top Orientals as that is not traditionally done in those countries.

Ok, sounds good. Thank you very much, Wallace! Yeah, I wasn't going to top the prilep (orientals). Just curious, but what kind of climate will mess up the timing of the cure? I have cured the leaves in my basement bathroom. Which seemed to work ok. If I do fertilize is there a certain ratio to use? I have some fertilizer that I think is 16-14-and I forget the last number.

Thank you very much, Bob! I personally haven’t used any fertilizer. Just was saying this is what I have if it will work or I can get something else if need be.

"What are the ingredients in Miracle-Gro Singles?
Ingredients. Guaranteed Analysis: Total Nitrogen (NI) (24): Ammoniacal Nitrogen (3.5%), Urea Nitrogen (20.5%), Available Phosphate (P2O5) (8%), Soluble Potash (K2O) (16%). Derived from: Ammonium Sulfate, Potassium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Urea, Urea Phosphate."

There is no indication of how much chloride or urea. I think your plants are large enough that the urea won't be a problem. If there is too much chloride, then your tobacco may be fireproof.

Ok, thank you very much, Bob! If there is too much chloride it will be fireproof? Is that saying that the tobacco won’t be smokable when cured?

I’m sorry for changing my mind but after thinking about it. Was wondering if this fertilizer would work for a light sprinkle/fertilizer? If so, want to use this instead. It would be cheaper and seems to have lower numbers.

Thanks, Burge! Yeah, I had the intention of doing just that. I got busy and when I went over to my parents the gardens were tilled and so I assumed that everything was ready. I had talked to my parents of using horse manure and fertilize the gardens. I will plan for next year to not assume and make a better effort to make sure it’s fertilized. We have horses and have horse manure.

That would be the way to do it. I know for here in Canada the tobacco love the sandy soil. I am not sure what the root system will be. I know there was a company in PEI selling RYO tobacco a long time ago that I loved. It was grown in the red clay soil of PEI. Everyone loved it.
