My initial question was, "how long can a transplant be held, and still grow to a normal plant?" This has transformed into an observation of tobacco as a tidy little, seed-producing house plant.
Bob

A Bonsai, seed producing house plant. I guess it can be done. I'm going to make one for my rolling room.

Keeping those orphan seedlings is a pain in the butt. You've got to find a sunny location indoors through the winter, water them as needed, prune them as needed, etc. If you decide to adopt some, I would make it a manageably small number. They seem to do fairly well in 3-1/2" square pots. Bigger is better for the plant, but consumes significantly more space.

Bob

EDIT: Surprisingly, the Virginia and burley varieties seem to hold up better in small pots than the Orientals.

Partial Reveal

Garden20140603_1196_entireGarden_700.jpg

Some of the bedsheets have come off. That sounds like a fun thing--to just remove the Agribon, and see how nicely the tobacco is doing. But lurking beneath the row cover are and unspecified variety of weeds and grass that have been enjoying the relatively herbivore-free growing conditions.

So each great uncovering is accompanied by a stint of serious weed pulling. On the positive side, the Agribon often maintains just the right soil moisture content to make it likely that a pulled weed will bring its root system with it. So at the moment when the Agribon comes off, I pull all the grass and weeds that may have sprouted up.

The Cyprus Oriental mw (8 plants) is the unidentified variety picked up by MarkW's friend who journeyed to Cyprus. I can't remember why I'm growing Chichicaste 712. I think Knucks may have had something to do with it.

The long bed beside the house is home to Florida Sumatra this year. Total of 16 plants. These are pretty unimpressive today, but will be above the window sills before long. In the foreground is one of my pulley-thingie hose guides.

We were under a full fledged drizzle warning today, but it didn't hit us. So, it will be time for my communion with the garden hose later this evening.

I'm almost a dead guy, just need a little more time.

The last Tippman World paintball competition that I participated in was back in 2005. I stayed in a nearby motel for the event. A few of the guys who camped out on the competition grounds (Hell, MI) borrowed my motel shower, just before they left town. One of them left the Phish t-shirt. Never could find him again. I'm too cheap to throw away a perfectly good t-shirt that fits.

I'm actually a Tangerine Dream and Jean Michel Jarre sort of person. I do enjoy playing Bluegrass, and also listening to it (instrumentals only). I never really got into heavy metal. But my creaky old fingers don't play guitar and banjo very presentably these days.

I can't take any credit for that one, Bob. You picked it up somewhere else. What is it? I can't find it in GRIN. I do see Chichicaste TI 704 in the FTT seed bank listed as a flue cure.

Looks good Bob, I sent the 712 seed with the Cyprus seed, PI 116087 from Hunduras. also listed as Buro Cuba. I grew this out for Nrustic last year.

Now I remember. Thank you. I do have the details recorded, but was too lazy to go look.

GRIN said:
116087. NICOTIANA TABACUM L. Solanaceae.
Common tobacco.
From Honduras. Seeds presented by Ricardo
Aparicio, Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, Mexico,
through the American consul at Tegucigalpa,
at the request of W. A. Archer,
Bureau of Plant Industry. Received June 9, 1936.
Chichicaste (Honduras) ; Burro (Cuba).

So, this sample originated in Honduras (1936). I love those old accessions.

"Chichicaste" is so much more euphonious than "donkey." This one's listed as a primitive. Go figure.

We All Shall Come Rejoicing

Bringing in the leaves of 2013 Olor from the curing shed. These never looked quite ready to go into the kiln, until today. With a bit of rain today, and a constant high humidity, the timing was perfect to handle them, and prepare them to go into a kiln. There's not much left in the shed.

Garden20140604_1205_bringing2013OlorFromShed_400.jpg

Mid and top leaf from 2013 Dominican Olor, after 10 months in the shed.

The slight greenish tint to the underside of some leaves will vanish during kilning, so long as the upper surface has colored properly.

I have to remember to have the Cozy Can free in early July, for flue-curing tasks.
