In this shot, you can judge the size of the Izmir Karabaglar.

This is some big stuff. It's the 23rd of August, and still no hint of budding.

Garden20150823_2049_ColumbianGarcia_bed_600.jpg

I did manage to prime the lugs today.

I had hoped to drive the smallest of the Columbian Garcia to desperation, by topping it. A new sucker is growing at the top, but unlike every other variety that is topped in late summer, the sucker on this Columbian Garcia does not appear to be forming a bud head.

If I don't get any seed, I may try growing it in a small pot indoors, over the winter.

Don't go to any trouble. I think I have two 2x3" zip locks so full of Colombian Garcia seed I could barely close the zip. I bagged two plants last year.

I appreciate the thought. I may have to accept some of your seed. But it sure would be satisfying to figure out how to subjugate the stubborn thing.

Excellent pictures of the grow, Mr DeluxeStogie! And I do think post #200 in this thread covers some very important facts based in the reality of what happens when we grow these various strains in different climate/soil zones.
Recipes for a blend, or advisories of strain attributes in an end product can be little more than a generalization, in many cases.
Never-the-less, a good place to start, when making selections.

Bob, a big thanks for this year's grow blog. Like I've told you before, I learn a lot reading your posts. The attention to detail and pictures is outstanding! Thanks again!

Thanks to all for the kind words. I can't tell you how many times I've needed to go back through one of my earlier grow logs to clarify something from several years ago. Having a well documented log is an asset to me. And of course, they're fun to write and photograph, even when problems arise.

I'll take a pinch of Colombian Garcia seed off of you if the offer is open. If I have any seed you'd like in trade ,you're welcome to it.

I've expressed the same a few times myself. Bob has a great mass of information with experience behind it. I'm serious when I say he should be publishing what he knows. Or teaching a college ag class somewhere.

The GRIN comparison grow-out has been interesting. GRIN Unknown #10 appears to have all the leaf and auricle characteristics of Izmir Ozbas, but what is bizarre is that 3 of 10 (30%) form a widely oval stalk crossection near the growth end, and then spontaneously twin the stalk. Although the total sample size is relatively small (only 10 plants), the repeated abnormality seems likely to be genetic.

The Columbian Garcia continues to grow and to not form a bud. What seems unusual is that the American Bob displays an uncharacteristically thick head.

If you squint, you can see that I had "Stogie" embroidered in matching color on the back of my FTT hat. (They charged by the letter!)

Cigar filler donated to GRIN from Honduras.
...and stated to have come from Columbia on the GRIN seed envelope. PI 405672. It would be nice to have some historical background on this unique cigar filler variety. But I know of none.

I really do like the plant. And it kilns into mild, medium brown filler leaf, with a subtle, distinctive and enjoyable aroma. A winner all around. Except for when it's a loser--like making seed for me. It blossomed for Knucklehead!

Love the Garcia.

As far as flowering, it may be the location. Not enough sun hours. I am having a similar problem with Golden Burley planted in a spot that does not get as many hours sunlight. Still has not budded. Starts from the same tray in the big field were flowers and topped end of June.

I didn't realize we could have names embroidered on the hats...
