Here is a link to the completed data sheet for my 2014 grow. You will notice that there are a number of embedded equations to facilitate such conversions as inches to centimeters. Also the "Last Updated" value is automatically set to the last time the file is saved.

Bob

I had a bit of trouble opening that 2014 document. I tried wordpad and notepad and neither worked. I had to download a Excel Reader 2.0. which can be found at the windows app store. Interesting and very detailed document. Thanks for sharing a completed one.

Good thinking Charly. I did see at least one strain on the data sheet that I will grow this year.

Bob, if ya don't mind. Could you share any more logs you've completed over the years? It woul be a great reference.

Hi Bob, great to see that 2014 spreadsheet! Question, are the data for length and width and such averages or are they from specific plants you picked for measuring? Weren't you also taking measurements of harvest leafs? I was definitely going to ask for the spreadsheets of other years too. Anyway, I'd like to make something like this for myself as well although I'm thinking where I should find the time to do so haha.

My measurements are not averages. I visually inspect the representatives of a particular variety, then take the measurements on a "typical" plant. Measurements done of the same variety under different conditions (weather, garden bed, fertilizer use, pest pressure, etc.) usually comes up with different results. Since these data were simply for personal use in comparing varieties, they do not represent scientific rigor. They're just data snapshots.

Most telling are the measurements for Orientals. Some were grown at wide spacing when measured. In more recent seasons, they have been planted with traditional, close spacing. It has been my lazy habit to not repeat the measurements of varieties for which I have already gathered data.

Accumulating the data requires far more persistence than labor. Collating it all in a useful format (more than 100 varieties spread over numerous years) will take some thought and time.

So, these data sheets look like a scientific treasure trove, but they are really no more than single observations.

For someone not familiar with all these different varieties such an overview is a great way to get an idea of what he would want to grow, or what to expect. My eye is drawn to the Timor, which I am growing at the moment. Have you considered making a single file of all different varieties you've grown rather than having them lined up per year?

You haven't really convinced me. Still looks like a treasure trove to me...

Four more to go. I have all but 4 varieties transferred into 1020 cell trays.

The Piloto Cubano PR seeds seemed to swell on the soil, but they have not germinated after 11 days. So I've restarted them, and sprinkled seed more heavily. Although I've planned for 16 plants in the ground, even one would be adequate to refresh the seed.

With my concern about the Piloto Cubano viability, I went ahead and started 8 additional Havana 322 seedlings.

The tray with the Besuki varieties got overheated one afternoon, and a number of seedlings cooked. I've reset those as well, and removed the clear dome. All the trays now have no domes and no seedling heat mats, but are draped with multiple layers of Agribon AG-15 (maybe at ~40% shade now).

3 trays

Fortunately, by each winter, I have forgotten just how truly tedious it is to start these seeds and transfer the seedlings. [The year of 43 varieties has mercifully faded to a blur in my memory.]

Of course, starting the seeds is tedious, but it is also enjoyable, and so much rewarding when you see the results you get in the end ! :)
43 varieties ! Incredible ! I would have to double what I planned to reach this !! ... maybe next year :D :D (I'm joking !)

Nice to see you are off to a good start, Bob.
Look forward to seeing more pics as you progress.
I've become partial to using the plastic mini-blinds cut to 5" pieces and a permanent sharpie for labeling strains.

I went for a routine checkup at the Veterans Hospital today. When the "checklist" questions reached, "Do you smoke?" I replied, "Pipe and cigars." "Would you like to quit?" "Absolutely not. I grow my own cigars."

The Physician Assistant (my provider) followed that with clearly off-script questions about the crop size, the growing, the curing and processing, and the rolling of cigars. How much does it cost me per cigar? (About 25 cents for a toro size cigar, I answered.) Eyebrows went up. The Nicotiana conversation continued.

I concluded with my assertion that my approach to smoking is my greatest source of exercise, as well as my most valuable psychotherapy.

I have to add that I am satisfied, indeed delighted with the quality of health care provided by the VA. Good folks there. Today's diagnosis..."Getting old. See you next year."

Great report Bob! I'm a regular attendee at the PHX VA. Good folks there too. Always like reading your posts.

That's great news Bob. I hear folks talk down about the VA medical facilities but I can honestly say that if they weren't there for me I would be a dead man by now. I've always received great care from the VA and its great to hear you do too.
