I'm seeing early suckering on several cigar and Oriental varieties mainly. Totally different from last year when they waited till after topping. No aphids yet, knock on wood. Just a little unidentified chewing pest damage. Hopefully I can spray this evening if it stays sunny.

Sprayed for aphids and worms today. For the most part the big patch is doing good. Have some stunted pants at the low end from so much rain the past week.14028833133050.jpg

You've got a lot of very healthy looking tobacco. I'll be curious if your Silver River or your Bolivia Criollo Black is the tallest.

They are clearly close relatives based on growth and appearance. At this point the silver river is broader and heavier in both stalk and leaves. I grew SR last year, Crillo it's new to me. Another interesting comparison will be consistency of time to maturity. Last year the SR was all over the place. A late bloomer and weeks difference in budding, even from side by side plants.

My One Sucker is showing a funny pattern with the upper leaves, each curving to create almost a "swirl" when viewed from the top.

Someone who has grown it, is this normal?14032314165760.jpg

Now I want to know if it swirls the opposite direction if grown in the Southern Hemisphere.

Maybe, but probably not.

Loyola Univ said:
All curl (circumnutate) counterclockwise around stems of their host plants. The next logical question for the curious naturalist is if species in the southern hemisphere have clockwise circumnutation. Dr. Purrington says no, they twist counterclockwise in Australia, too.

Scantic will be guarded carefully from here on out. Going to be.some nice wrapper if they keep growing like this and remain undamaged.

8" sandpaper disk on top of leaf for size reference.
