you would be proud of me . I only killed one buck last year. my son in laws are finally learning to get their own. But the pigs are going down, 3 200 lbers in the last 2 months.

Bob, sorry to sidetrack.

BarG, I remember wild pork as a little "gamey" with a tendency to dry out, but good. Much like venison.

I marinated a venison shoulder (normally tough when cooked) using a beef pastrami recipe then smoked 12 hrs, the result was amazing, moist and tender. 5 days prep, but bet it would be good for those hogs too.

Cuba Varieties

This morning, while walking my baby tobacco, I noticed differences in the leaf shape of the Cuban varieties that I've planted for the first time this season. My assumption was that the Corojo 99 from Robaina would be indistinguishable from Coroja. But these two are clearly different from one another. The Coroja appears to have a more acute point to the leaves than the Corojo 99.

I've included the Criollo just for comparison.

looks great Bob, mine look pretty much the same. same size as well.
The Coroja I put under shade is doing better than its sunny buddies.
Tell me if you know though- what is the difference between Corojo (like Don sells) and Coroja (like the variety we're growing) besides spelling of course. Is it the same? This is one of the very few varieties that seem to swap subtle spellings (as with Habano and Havana ) and I can't figure out why. I do know in the spanish language the ending in O usually is a masculine reference and A is feminine .Similarly in pronunciation , the b and v are a combination of sorts leaving the mouth (My high school spanish teacher always referred to this as a "soft brushed B")but seems the b and v spelling can be virtually interchangeable and still hold the same meaning. but why they do this with the endings with this tobacco variety is beyond me.

Very interesting comparison Bob. I'm very interested in how the corojo 99 compares to other spanish types it's very cool you were able to track down cuban seed right from the island.

Have you ever noticed your vuelta abajo putting out suckers already? I was surprised to find one no larger than your latest pictures already putting out a sucker at every node.

I don't see any garlic on your garden:).
My plants are about the same size. I only have Corojo 99 and few Fl.Sumatra for wrapper or binder.

Each year, different varieties seems to sucker early. I'm not sure what triggers that.

There is no garlic in my garden. I planted it after the first frost last autumn, and dug it two weeks ago. I planted all of the Anka that you sent, and an equal quantity of Czech Broadleaf garlic. All of it is currently drying.

For me, garlic is a major food group.

6 of my 7 strains all suckered early (the Semois did not). I attribute it to the 20+ days of rain ( and below average temps) we had in May.

Wish I had done Corojo 99 this year, I'll need to get some seed from one of you guys if Skychaser doesn't have any by next spring. I'm removing some large hedges and re landscaping my front yard probably in the fall, so by next year I should have room for another forty plants, bringing me close to a hundred total. I'll finally have time to grow all the cigar types I'd like simultaneously, as well as some orientals AND bright leaf. That'll be my fifth year and I think I've finally worked out most of the kinks with this whole process, thanks to everyone here at FTT, especially you Bob. Many thanks!
