Another update then. Im not sure what these plants were fed during the last week but they did take off like i fed them a hefty dose of steroids. The last 2 (one small stalk black mammoth and one connecticut shade) got their final pots today as their roots had started growing quite agressively through the bottoms of the 2l containers they were housed in.
I also raised the saucers up on wooden 2x4s so i could install tubes to drain them to a central vessel. It made the pots a bit higher, i hope i wont regret that if they try to grow through the roof of the tent later.

In other news these leaves are getting huge. I very much believe that going for 5 plants instead of 6 was the correct choice. Maybe 4 would have been an even better idea we shall see.

I have been doing a bit of reading and it seems like uv (especially uvb) light makes a difference in what flavors are made by the plants. I might get one or 2 reptile uvb bulbs and run em in the light fixture on a timer.

so far the fans seem to be working out great. I am probably gonna have to move them as the plants mature though. I cannot keep moving the ones on the poles up forever as i wont have any airflow down in between the leaves.

Not sure how i would mount em or where but ill figure that one out as i go i guess.

Scratch that its flowering time. which i guess means i need to quicken up getting the uv bulbs and that i can probably save the other 2 plants still in small pots that i almost discarded.

What is the leaf count per variety? That's more important than how tall the plants get at harvest time. Those plants have very closely spaced leaves, if your leaf count is right you are going to have a normal harvest. They also still have some more growing to do. They look great.

one of the criollo 98 (bottom right) in front has 8 big leaves and a total of 16 including the top ones that are still growing, im not counting the 2 closest to the bud. The back right one looks the same but i havent counted it. Altough the bottom 2 leaves look a bit smaller than the ones directly above em.

the burley 9 (back left) has 16 leaves total and around 9 big ones, again not counting 2 closest to the bud.

Stem is about 45cm high so they have grown quite low and compact.

Saying that i also removed a few smaller/not growing leaves resting on the coir a bit ago so the total leaves produced is probably slightly higher.

The window plant under the smaller lights has started yellowing from the bottom. Im quite sure these arent mature, they might not be getting enough nutrients or just not getting enough sun.

Top leaves are still quite green and uniformly colored.

but the lower ones have started yellowing properly

Commercial growers top the plants when 50% of the field is showing at least one flower. Fair Trade Tobacco Channel on Youtube.

might have topped them a bit early then. I did find some research indicating that you loose yield by waiting until flowers opened hence why i topped them earlier.

Is there any pros/cons to do it one way or the other?

Topping starts the clock ticking on leaf maturation. In commercial growing, in which all the tobacco will be harvested at the same time, topping synchronizes maturation. For my home growing, I usually wait for the stalk of the bud head to elongate, since this also allows the entire stalk to elongate. This increases the separation between leaf nodes all the way down the stalk, making leaf priming easier. This also makes identifying and removing suckers at leaf nodes easier.

that would be helpful indeed. its gonna be interesting to see how it turns out. I probably will wait with topping the second batch ive got growing to see the difference.

I changed my mind if they get taller by doing that im not gonna be doing that. They are now around 30cm from the lights and the lights are as high as they are gonna get if i dont duct tape em up.

I have gradually started reducing the amount of nitrogen in the nutrients im feeding them and the leaves have grow a lot over the last week. Im just waiting for em to start turning yellow now really. Did have some nutrient issues (didnt get enough water which im guessing led to nutrient lockout) with the burley so the top leaves are a bit yellow speckled but that has since been corrected and i feel like they are becoming greener again.

Otherwise its business as usual i have been able to keep on top of the suckers and none of em have grown more than an inch or so, so far at least.

In other news the lop leaves are acting a bit weird since i topped em. The top leaf has turned upside down and is now showing the underside to the lights.

Interesting grow. We haven't had a whole lot of indoor grows but the frequency seems to be increasing. Perhaps we need a sub-forum for indoor growing to discuss different light setups, tents, fans, advice, opinions, etc. I just started growing leafy greens under led lights and I didn't know crap. I'm still trying to learn. Hit the like button if you guys think there is any interest in an indoor grow sub-forum.

That does sound useful. Might not be very well used as of right now though, altough that might change if people get decent results ofc. The info i gathered online (here and the book) as of right now seems to indicate that it might not be worth it, this might be a reason to why we dont see many grows right now.
